Sometimes people need backyard pods to be a flexible space – one that can be used for extra sleeping or guest accommodation but not quite as self-contained as a proper ‘granny flat’. Anyway, not everyone needs a bathroom in their sleep-out pod if there is easy access from the pod to a main bathroom or second toilet in the main house.

Flexible dining, office, or studio area
Using IKEA flat-packed furniture for the fit-out, we created handy wall storage with the Kallax shelving unit. There’s room for a printer, scanner, sewing machine, stationery, file trays, sound system, recharging bay – doors and drawers can be fitted too.
The table can be used for work space or dining. The table top unclips from the shelving unit if more floor-space is needed. Two versatile Patrik chairs can be used for dining or office seating, or as extra lounge seating when the sofa bed is used as a bed.
Extremely compact and functional kitchenette
Using top-quality IKEA kitchen cabinetry and fittings, we managed to squeeze a fully functional kitchenette into just 1.8m of wall-space.
There are wall cupboards for glassware, cups, and pantry items – with a fitted microwave and handy extra cupboard above. The stainless steel sink is full-size, with draining board with mixer tap. The bench-top area allows for the use of small appliances such as a coffee machine. Generous base cabinets accommodate the pull-out waste sorting bin, shelf for cleaning products, a concealed mini bar fridge, and deep drawers for storing cutlery, crockery, and small appliances.
Large built-in wardrobe or storage cabinet
The Pax wardrobe system from IKEA comes in cabinets only 44cm deep but still with (pull-out) hanging space and internal organising accessories like drawers, baskets, etc.
Convertible living or sleeping area
Add a wall-mounted television, and a compact sofa bed from IKEA – you’ll be amazed at the room you have for working or studying, relaxing with friends, or having guests staying overnight in this cleverly-designed 3m x 6m backyard pod.
